Ariki Restoration News

This post has been reposted with permission of our friends over at the Ariki Restoration:

Welcome to the new Ariki classic yacht newsletter. We hope to bring you interesting news and developments in the restoration project and beyond. In this issue we give talk about the open day and give you a bit of our background.

Open Day Sunday 13th August

The weather held out for us on Sunday and we welcomed about 90 people through the tent at Okahu Bay Landing. Guests of all ages came along, shared some of their own stories and saw the progress Robin and his team are making.

It was wondered to meet so many of the old crew as well as past owners and guardians of her. We had two crew members in their 90’s visit which was very special for us. Thank you to all those who generously took the time to be part of our day.

Our boat builder – Robin Kenyon

An exciting part of the project for us has been working with our boat builder, Robin Kenyon. He has a lot of experience working both here and overseas on beautiful classic yachts like Ariki. He also has a connection to Prize by being Chad Thompson’s son-in-law.

The Boat

It was lovely to be able to show everyone who came along where we are up to with the restoration and share stories of her previous bumps and dents. Here you can see her deck all patched and ready for the fibre glassing to be done next week. We have the new bulwark anchored in place ready to be installed afterward and recarved.

How can you help?

Those of you who have connected in already will know that we are making a documentary about Ariki to gather together all her wonderful stories into one place. We would love you to connect in and share your stories. You do not need to be filmed if you don’t want to be, we are just interested in what you remember about your connection to this wonderful piece of Auckland maritime history.
Please email us on with your contact details and we will give you a call.
