Dragon built by Brin Wilson 1963 to the design of Johan Anker from Norway in 1929. She has a great history, she was built for Bob Stone and qualified for the Olympics but understand that she didn’t compete in the end. On occasions Jack Logan sailed on her with Bob Stone, as Bob had sailed with Jack on earlier Komutu which was the 18 foot Skimmer that was built by Jack that was sailed so successfully with Aldis , White and Stone as crew. The line up of Dragons on the slip at Okahu Bay , Don St Clair Brown Brown, Bob Stone, Ron Watson, Helmer Pedersen, Laurie Davidson Ron Holland ,Dennis Green and others was magic for a young fellow to see in the late 1960’s.
Komutu was in poor shape when we purchased her and since had a major restoration over 15 years which entailed removal of the keel, replacement of nearly 30 ribs/frames and some floors. All the keel bolts were replaced, The late Alan Smith, God Father of Dragons from Whangarei recommended the she be glassed which has been done and finished with two pot reaction lacquer . The interior is varnished and the a replica of the original cockpit layout has been carried out.
At this stage the rig is to be stepped ,there are two rigs and a number sails, one set of which has has been used in 3 National Dragon series. She comes with a tandem axle road trailer and 3 wheel launching trailer. There is two sets of spars and some of the original deck gear. She is the second Dragon to registered the first was Barco Del Ora . Komutu is the last of the Dragons I was involved with the others Aotearoa is still sailing however the Kauras and Kylara have been lost. Komutu is currently dry stored in Wellsford, an hour North of Auckland.
