Soon to be commissioned and be found at her mooring in Stonington Harbour, Connecticut USA. Woodwind is a handsome example of the successful and elegant Concordia yawl design and build. A classic Concordia yawl in overall outstanding condition. She has had the same owner since 2002. Woodwind’s ownership takes great pride in the vessel with an affirmative maintenance program in place at Dodson Boatyard, with all systems fully operational. Maintained and cared for to the hilt by Dodson Boatyard Stonington CT (as she has been for 17 years, previously maintained at Concordia yachts South Dartmouth, MA). Dodson Boatyard have decades of experience in all aspects Concordian. In excellent condition, Woodwind (hull #89) and with recent price reduction presents an outstanding opportunity to purchase. Topsides are to be fared and painted this spring, and Woodwind is currently in her shed for off season storage in Hopkinton RI.

Construction

Woodwind (Hull #89) was built in 1962 at Abeking and Rasmussen Shipyard, Lemwerder, Germany. A carvel planked hull with African Mahogany planks upon white oak stem lower planks port and starboard; laminated white oak frame and beams with silicon bronze fastenings. Three keel bolts completely removed and replaced with stainless steel or bronze (where appropriate in 2003). .

Full iron keel with bronze skeg and three bladed Max-Prop (feathering) propeller set in rudder aperture. Mahogany rudder. The superstructure is varnished mahogany with painted Dynel decks (synthetic fiber) overlaid on planked mahogany. The cabin top is planked cedar with a canvas overlay. All deck trim, coamings, and hatches are mahogany. The decks were painted November 2022. The self-bailing cockpit was rebuilt in 2009 with teak lockers and teak sole (with new frames under cockpit 2010). There is a bridge deck.

The interior is bright finished raised knotty pine bulkheads with locust trim and painted cedar overheads. The cabin sole is teak planking (original). The decks are natural solid teak planks over oak frames. Bronze stanchions with varnished teak toerails, handrails and trim. Bronze taff and bow rails.

Tanks are Monel (nickel-copper alloy). Woodwind is finished in white, navy blue boot top with green anti-fouling bottom paint.

Accommodation and layout

Woodwind has a distinctive, bright and well ventilated interior with comfortable berths for four. The forepeak has a sail bin and stowage forward, followed by two pipe berths with lockers beneath. There are V berth inserts to convert forepeak bunk space into a double berth. The forward cabin has reading lights, mahogany overhead hatch providing ambient light and ventilation, and two round bronze opening ports forward. Next to port thru paneled locust door is the enclosed head with manual toilet (with deck pump out, and macerator for overboard discharge), vintage vanity, medicine cabinet, linen hamper, locker space and opening bronze portlight. To starboard across from the head are two hanging lockers.

The main cabin has the traditional and very comfortable Pullman/Concordia style berths port and starboard. These can be stowed out of sight to double as backrests for settees. There is a varnished cherry fixed drop leaf table just port of centerline, and a cast iron Concordia solid fuel cabin heater/stove is set forward and slightly to port in the main saloon which vents via Charley Noble. Outboard of the berths are shelves and slatted lockers. Headroom is 6’3″ in main saloon. The settee cushions are sea foam green corduroy and include back and side bolsters (reupholstered 2003) . Forepeak mattresses were reupholstered in 2013, main saloon mattresses in 2003. Interior 12 volt lamps and brass oil lamp. The main saloon has a large varnished wood butterfly hatch aft of mainmast.

The teak sole can be easily removed for access to the bilge. The galley (rebuilt in 2013, and fully equipped) is aft to with gimballed two burner Force 10 CNG stove with lockers and shelving outboard, starboard. The Yanmar diesel engine (1993) is located partly under bridge deck and partly under cockpit deck and is readily reached by removing the panels, companionway steps and covers. The engine box can serve as a galley station. To port there is the icebox, storage and the stainless steel galley sink with manually (via foot pump) pressured water via faucet. The galley benefits from the ambient light and ventilation provided from two opening portlights facing aft.

The interior surfaces were all stripped and re-painted or varnished in 2011.

The companionway leads out to the self-bailing cockpit, finished in teak (rebuilt in 2009) with tiller steering. The 20 gallon Monel fuel tank in portside locker and starboard locker with engine controls. Aft lazarette for storage. Custom fitted cockpit cushions (2013)

Woodwind is a mast head rigged yawl, with varnished box sectioned Sitka spruce masts and booms. The mainmast is keel stepped upon a longitudinal oak beam (lengthened and reinforced in 2003). The mizzen mast is stepped on the after deck where the weight is transmitted to the horn timber. Booms and spinnaker poles are also Sitka. Club jib boom. All spars are bright finished.
