Exquisite 18’ 7” Maine Peapod

 Yachts / / New

$47,500.00

“Tangent” is large double ender of wood, carbon and kevlar construction in superb condition. Perhaps the fastest, strongest Maine Peapod in the world, the hull was built in California, shipped to NZ with the interior and decking finished at Kevin Johnson’s boat builders in Devonport in 2003. Starting with a laminated oak keel and stem, the hull is built using progressively lighter construction as you go up with Alaskan yellow cedar strip planking below the waterline and western red cedar above. The ribs are laminated Sitka spruce. Finished with clear E-glass in the interior of the hull, the exterior of the hull is sheaved in several layers of carbon fibre and kevlar. The thwarts, seating, centreboard case, cockpit coaming and trim are made of African, Honduran, and Philippine mahogany. While the centreboard, case and retracting rudder are of wood construction there is extensive use of hidden carbon fibre reinforcement. Built using West Systems epoxy throughout, few people can spot anything other than classic wood construction.

Both the centreboard and rudder are lead weighted and slightly oversized. The overall effect of its design is a boat with a very low center of gravity that sails more like a yacht than a small centreboard sailer. It happily claws upwind in 35 knots with double reefed sails. The solid Douglas fir mast and spars are designed on the classic Herreshoff 12.5 gaff rig. It has won the line honours in the Mahurangi Regatta under 20 foot category. It has been a great boat with many adventures but having built a schooner, and with another project underway, we regrettably need to let it go.
